Dharma Arts Network

Launched at Buddha Mind - Creative Mind ?

As well as being a wonderful opportunity to practice mindfulness, meals also provide us with the teaching of interconnectedness.

What a gift it is to have a meal! How many countless beings, sentient and insentient, provide food for us?

When eating an apple compassion is manifesting itself. A seed, sun, rain and earth grew the tree (worms were covered in the previous blog blessing). Somehow the apple has been brought to us, most probably by several people.

When does the apple cease to be an apple and become you? In your hand, your mouth, your tummy?

When do you become the apple?

Here is the meal blessing I was given by my keen eyed teacher, Mu Jin Jim Wilson...

With every bite of food the whole world sustains us.
With every breath we breathe the whole world sustains us.
We now accept this food with gratitude and thanks.
May we use this gift of food for the benefit of all existence.

As engaged Buddhists, we may wish to think about where our apples, and other food come from. Cutting down on food miles can help heal our planet. Trying to eliminate as much packaging as possible reduces waste. Tap water tastes great in most places!

With a deep bow,

Guy
